The Road Accident Fund is a social security Fund that provides compensation to all drivers of motor vehicles in South Africa in respect of liability incurred or damage caused as a result of a traffic collision. Liability incurred in relation to property damage (such as damage to vehicles, buildings, vehicle contents) is excluded from cover. The Road Accident Fund operates a system whereby the claimant is assigned a percentage of responsibility for the accident, and the Road Accident Fund pays the claimant a percentage of a full settlement based on a percentage that was not deemed to be their responsibility.

Salary: R244,732.00 per annum

Mission of the Road Accident Fund (RAF)

The RAF’s mission is to provide appropriate cover to all road users within South Africa’s borders; to rehabilitate and compensate individuals injured in motor vehicle accidents; and to actively promote the safe use of roads.

Available Locations:

  • East London (2 positions)
  • Gqeberha (1 position)
  • Mthatha (2 positions)

Purpose of the Job

The Driver/Messenger is responsible for safely transporting people, documents, and goods. The incumbent must follow safety procedures, adhere to road safety regulations, and report any vehicle issues or delays.

Key Performance Areas

Messenger Services:

  • Collect and verify correspondence from government institutions.
  • Deliver packages or messages on time and handle them with care.
  • Maintain communication between destinations and report delivery status.
  • Ensure deliveries are documented and recorded in the logbook.
  • Sort items efficiently to ensure timely deliveries.

Administration:

  • Monitor and ensure timely execution of copy and binding requests.
  • Archive scanned files and documents in compliance with the National Archives Act and RAF’s strategies.
  • Maintain records, including transfer requests to offsite storage.
  • Monitor the availability of messenger services for deliveries.

Transportation and Operation:

  • Load, unload, and securely transport goods, materials, and staff.
  • Report any electrical or mechanical faults to the Facilities Manager.

Vehicle, Machinery & Equipment Maintenance:

  • Perform daily vehicle inspections to ensure safety standards.
  • Ensure that copying and binding machines are maintained in working order.

Reporting:

  • Report vehicle and equipment defects, accidents, and traffic violations.
  • Maintain vehicle condition and logbooks in line with the Fleet Management Policy.
  • Report unexpected delays, maintenance issues, and technical faults.

Processing Mail:

  • Register, stamp, and sort incoming and outgoing mail according to established procedures.
  • Ensure all documents are filed appropriately and prepare mail for posting.

Qualifications

  • Matric or Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Valid Code 10 (EC1/EC) Driver’s License.
  • Professional Driver’s Permit (PDP).

Experience

  • At least 1 year of experience in a driving/messenger services environment.
