About the Apprenticeship

This apprenticeship program offers the Occupational Certificate: Heavy Equipment Mechanic qualification, designed to prepare learners to become skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanics. The role involves diagnosing and repairing faults in mechanical and hydraulic systems, including engines and power train components.

Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, learners will have the skills to:

  • Perform Preventative Maintenance: Carry out scheduled and preventative maintenance on heavy equipment.
  • Repair Engine & Power Train Systems: Dismantle, assess, repair, and reassemble heavy equipment engines and power train system components.
  • Fault Diagnosis: Diagnose and repair faults in diesel engines and power train systems for heavy equipment.

Minimum Requirements

To apply for the Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic Apprenticeship, candidates must meet the following educational requirements:

  • Grade 9 with a pass in English Literacy, Mathematics, and Science.
  • N2 Qualifications in Mathematics, Engineering Drawing/Industrial Electronics, Engineering Science, and Motor/Diesel Trade Theory.
  • L3 NCV Certificate in Engineering and Related Design.
  • Grade 11 with Mathematics, Science, and English.
  • Grade 12 with Mathematics, Science, and English.
  • 4+ years of experience as an artisan aid and RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning).

Key Responsibilities

As an apprentice, you will be required to:

  • Complete Phase 2 (N2 Diesel Trade Theory) before progressing to Phase 3 (N3 Diesel Trade Theory).
  • Follow the MERSETA Learner/Apprenticeship program requirements.
  • Adhere to the Limited Duration Contract requirements set by the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with all agreed-upon bursary requirements.
