Position Purpose
As a Motor Mechanic at Transnet, you will play a critical role in maintaining and repairing the terminal’s mobile fleet. Your goal will be to ensure that all equipment is functional, safe, reliable, and available for operations to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.
Key Responsibilities (Position Outputs)
- Post-Operation Inspections:
Perform mechanical inspections on all mobile fleet equipment after operations to prevent recurring issues and ensure smooth functioning in the next shift. - Preventative Maintenance:
Regularly examine and assess the fleet to carry out preventative maintenance, ensuring reliability and high availability of equipment. - Monitor and Detect Faults:
Continuously evaluate equipment during operation to identify early warning signs of potential malfunctions and take proactive steps to prevent breakdowns. - Apprentice Training:
Plan and prepare apprentices for on-the-job training, helping to develop their skills and transfer knowledge for their professional growth. - Fault Repairs:
Respond quickly to breakdowns, repairing faults in the shortest possible time while adhering to safety standards, minimizing operational downtime. - Repair Planning:
Assess repair work and identify spare parts required, coordinating with your supervisor to ensure quick ordering and repairs. - Safety:
Isolate mobile equipment during repair work to maintain a safe working environment. - Decision-Making:
In the absence of a supervisor, be able to make critical decisions regarding breakdowns and routine maintenance. - Equipment Maintenance:
Maintain equipment in optimal condition to ensure maximum lifespan and performance. - Rigging Operations:
Conduct rigging operations for preventative maintenance and breakdown repairs. - Standby Duties:
Be available for standby duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
To be eligible for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Red Seal Diesel Mechanic Trade Test Certificate
- Valid Code 08/B vehicle driver’s license
- Experience:
- For internal candidates: 1 year of relevant experience in the Diesel Mechanic environment (including apprenticeship training).
- For external candidates: 2-3 years of relevant experience in the Diesel Mechanic environment.
